Sustaining your Motivation for Long Periods of Time

Some of your goals may be achieved in months and some may take years. Some life goals can take decades. Through it all you will need to maintain and stick to your goal for long periods of time, the years may not seem so long now, but when you try to work towards a goal daily, the days, weeks and months s stretch and seem endless. That's why you'll need a strategy to help you stay motivated over the long term, and the best way to do that is to achieve small-scale goals.

Before getting into the nitty-gritty, you should be aware of something. Many people set unrealistic goals when they set goals and try to motivate them. This will be a huge problem for your motivation because you will know inside that you cannot achieve the goal, or at least, in the time limit.

For example, if you're trying to lose a hundred pounds, setting a goal to achieve it in a month is totally unrealistic. Not everyone can lose 25 pounds in a week, no matter what type of diet they follow, and even if a person loses a lot of luck, there's no way it's going to be sustainable. Not to mention that it would be very unhealthy.

This also applies to other lenses you might consider. If you're trying to get rich independently, you should probably give yourself more than six months to get there, unless of course you plan to use the lottery as a means of achieving that goal. Good luck with that. If you have

The goal is to be a pop star, you won't make it next week or even next year if your show sucks. You will have to practice, take lessons and many other things on the road to stardom.

Small goals

In order to achieve your goals without losing your motivation, you will need to break them down into small pieces. Have you heard the old adage. How can you eat an elephant? One bite at a time of course. That's the whole point here. If you think about all the steps it takes to reach your goal and how long it will take you to get there, you are likely to feel very frustrated. But when you break down a goal into size, you can essentially put one foot in front of the other without worrying too much about the destination. So how was it done?

The first thing you need to do is have the Chapter 5 blueprint already completed. Since you know the main steps needed to achieve your goal, you can now break this step down into smaller chunks. Consider the weight loss goal we've used throughout this chapter.

You have a weight loss goal section that says to lose 25 pounds. It may take two or three months or even longer. Whatever your period, this is your lens bullet point - your vision from step to step.

Now, if you want to break that specific weight loss goal, you can make it simple: lose 2 pounds a week, for 12-13 weeks until

reach this goal. However, you don't have to do this every week if you prefer not to. Alternatively, you can simply divide the target into five equal portions of five pounds.

This is how small goals work and whatever goal you set, you can always break it down further and give yourself a much smaller, more manageable and ultimately more achievable goal.
